Leeds, 14th May 2008 – The ‘Queensgate Revival’ project to transform a major part of Huddersfield town centre has taken a significant step forward with the submission of a planning application for a new retail led, mixed-use scheme, to Kirklees Council’s Planning Service.
Plans for the Council-led scheme will link into the existing Piazza Shopping Centre on Princess Alexandra Walk which is owned by Threadneedle. Designed by Leslie Jones Architects and supported by WM Saunders Partnership LLP, the new development will provide two large anchor stores, 16 unit shops, circa 100 residential units, a 100-bed hotel and new library, art gallery and information centre, as well as a new market hall.
Peter Hague from Jones Lang LaSalle, who is advising Kirklees Council, said: “The ‘Queensgate Revival’ scheme forms part of the wider regeneration of Huddersfield, and is set to breathe new life into the area through the introduction of new shopping, business and leisure facilities.”
Since announcing the blueprint for its ‘Queensgate Revival’ project, Kirklees Council, advised by Jones Lang LaSalle, has undertaken detailed consultations and feasibility studies. As a result, the plans have been reduced in scale and amended to take account of detailed professional advice received as well as views expressed by interested parties.
