| | | Upstream Sustainability Services recently collaborated with The Prince’s Accounting for Sustainability Project . Upstream Sustainability Services were invited to apply leading edge sustainability thinking by creating a worked example to demonstrate how the concept of ‘Connected Reporting’, developed by the Project, could be applied to the property investment sector.
Connected Reporting aims to make a clear connection between business strategy and sustainability whilst improving the relevance of information provided to investors by highlighting the connection between financial and sustainability performance. Upstream Sustainability Services developed an example of how an entity, representative of the property investment sector, might report, incorporating financial performance metrics such as the value of investment in energy efficiency initiatives and the monetary impact of extreme weather such as flooding and storm damage.
A round-table event was held at Clarence House in October with a number of key representatives from the industry to discuss the worked example, co-facilitated by Upstream Lead Director Julie Hirigoyen. Following positive reaction from those present, the worked example is currently being finalised and a copy will be made available on the Jones Lang LaSalle website once published.

Working with a collaborating centre of the United Nations, Upstream Sustainability Services has secured a two year mandate to support the Global Reporting Initiative in producing detailed guidelines to supplement the multi-sector G3 guidelines. The G3 Guidelines represent a global sustainability reporting framework first published in 1999 (and revised in 2006) to assist companies and governments in disclosing their economic, environmental, and social performance on issues such as climate change and supply chain management. Katherine Miles Sector Supplement Manager at GRI said: “Building on its experience of advising many of the UK and Europe’s leading property companies in their sustainability reporting efforts, including how to comply with generic GRI guidelines, Upstream will bring significant expertise to the table.”
Matthew Tippett, Director at Upstream Sustainability Services, Jones Lang LaSalle added: “With the built environment contributing around 30-40% of greenhouse gas emissions globally, as well as 30-40% of solid waste generation from construction and occupation, the imperative to develop globally applicable guidelines to support the sector in reporting its impacts – and ultimately drive improved performance through targeted reduction programmes – has never been more pressing.”
In collaboration with the GRI and a Working Group of sustainability reporters and industry experts including Hermes (with the British Property Federation), Lend Lease, ProLogis, Oxford Properties, Arup, Landcom and Citycon, Upstream’s role will be to build consensus amongst a geographically diverse group of construction and real estate stakeholders to deliver guidelines which are tailored to the needs of the sector.
The Construction and Real Estate Sector Supplement (CRESS) will invite public comment twice throughout the two year project. Dates of these public comment periods will be announced in due course.

This is in addition to its position as the highest property company in The Sunday Times Best Green Companies Award and the highest property company in the FTSE 350 within the Carbon Disclosure Project, a global database of carbon disclosure sponsored by equity investors with $57 trillion assets under management. These awards recognise Hammerson's long-standing commitment to sustainability and the work that has been carried out over the past 10 years with our support as their strategic advisor.

Upstream Sustainability Services is delighted that The Crown Estate has won this year’s Building Public Trust awards for its 2009 Sustainability Report. Sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the award won was in the public sector category for 'Recognition for Excellence in Reporting in the Public Sector’. Upstream Sustainability Services worked with The Crown Estate to develop the content and design for the report and also collected, calculated and analysed its key performance indicators, which came in for particular praise from the judges, who commented: ‘very clear use and monitoring of key performance indicators, with reporting of The Crown Estate’s sustainability strategy and impacts linked clearly to its divisions and operational functions. Solid environmental reporting presented in an accessible and visually striking way.’ The report also included a thought piece on reporting challenges that are specific to the real estate sector in the hopes of contributing to the wider debate on best practice in reporting.
John Lelliott, Director of Finance at The Crown Estate, commenting on the award, said: “It is an undoubted privilege to win this award, especially against such other notable entrants. Our sustainability report was the result of a team effort, including the invaluable input from our partners Upstream Sustainability Services, and I congratulate everyone who contributed.”
